CSIC No.712 Research Institute

China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation No. 712 Research Institute (CSIC 712 Institute), founded in April 1963 and affiliated with China Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd., is a national scientific research institution specializing in marine electric propulsion systems and electrochemical power sources, headquartered in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

The institute has established disciplines covering electric propulsion systems, motors, automatic control, switchgear, electrochemical power sources, and new materials. Industry directions include integrated marine electric power, marine electrochemical power sources, hydrogen energy and fuel cells, new materials, and transportation electromechanical equipment. In marine electric propulsion technology, the institute has completed multiple R&D projects, including independently controllable medium-voltage AC electric propulsion system integration, the pure battery-powered tour boat “Junlv” certified by China Classification Society, and the hydrogen fuel cell-powered vessel “Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat No. 1” classed by CCS. In 2023, the institute incubated wholly-owned subsidiary Wuhan Weimai New Energy Power Co., Ltd. and led establishment of the Hubei Green Intelligent Ship Manufacturing Innovation Center. The institute has accumulated more than 330 national and provincial/ministerial scientific and technological achievements, including one National Science and Technology Progress Special Prize and three First Prizes.
